Without a fourth-generation Apple TV (or Apple TV 4K, or iPad in Home Hub mode), the connected home is incomplete. Only a home hub can provide secure remote access and ensure that rules and timers function while one is away from home. For users of Bluetooth-based devices, such as those belonging to the Eve family, a home hub offers additional advantages.
You can tell from the numerous improvements iOS 11 brings to HomeKit that the standard has evolved into a core component of Apple’s smartphone operating system. Bluetooth-based accessories respond much quicker to user commands, and automation becomes much more powerful through presence detection and refined options for timers and conditions. Let’s take a look at the most significant changes.
Elgato is expanding its Eve product family of HomeKit enabled accessories by showcasing Eve Lock, Eve Window Guard, Eve Smoke und Eve Aqua at IFA Berlin 2017. What’s more, Elgato introduces its second generation of Eve Thermo, a HomeKit enabled thermostatic radiator valve. For the door lock Eve Lock, the contact sensor Eve Window Guard and the fire alarm Eve Smoke, Elgato partners with leading suppliers to combine HomeKit’s superior security mechanisms with state of the art locking and smoke detection technology.
During the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June this year, Apple unveiled its HomeKit advancements scheduled to launch this fall, when iOS 11 goes public. In this post we’ll explain how you, as an Eve user, may benefit from the many enhancements.
It is only since iOS 10 that Apple offers the Home app as an interface for HomeKit-enabled accessories – an alternative to apps developed by other manufacturers, including Elgato’s Eve app. Another interface to HomeKit is Siri, a simple and interactive tool that enables you to control your connected home with voice commands via your iPhone, iPad, fourth-generation Apple TV, and Apple Watch.
Using the Eve app, you have access to all Apple-supported HomeKit data such as temperature, humidity, and on/off status, as well as additional information not available via Siri — air pressure, recent energy usage, historical data, and more.
iOS 10 features the Home app, which grants you quick access to your HomeKit-enabled accessories via the Control Center on your iOS device. HomeKit is deeply integrated into iOS, and offers additional stability and features that benefit the Eve app and Elgato HomeKit-enabled accessories. While the Elgato Eve app permits complete control of Eve accessories, the Apple Home app offers exclusive functions that cannot be replicated by other HomeKit-enabled apps, including Eve.
iOS 10.2 finally introduces notifications for Eve Door & Window and Eve Motion in the iOS device lock screen and/or home screen. That means you will automatically be notified of value changes, namely when a door or window is opened or closed, or movement is detected.
With TV apps having gained mainstream traction, Apple’s marketing machine appropriately positions Apple TV 4 as “The Future of Television”. Its upcoming TV app gives you access to shows and movies from multiple video apps — via one unified portal. It shows you what to watch next and offers recommendations attuned to your viewing preferences. And, with Apple TV 4 Siri Remote, you can control everything with your voice, including your HomeKit-enabled home – even without the new TV app.
On October 21st a large-scale cyber attack hit parts of the Internet in the US and Europe. Responsible for the attack are IoT devices that were hacked and infected with malware dubbed Mirai, which rendered them Botnet slaves. The target of the DDoS attack this time was DNS provider Dyn. Here’s Elgato CEO Dr. Markus Fest’s statement on the attack, and reasons why Eve devices were – and remain – unaffected.
