Elgato today unveiled Eve Motion, the first wireless motion sensor with HomeKit technology. Ready to be placed anywhere inside or outside your home, Eve Motion automatically activates HomeKit Scenes and accessories. Upon detecting the user’s presence or absence, it activates and deactivates power outlets, HVAC systems, lights or any combination thereof. You don’t even need to open an app or speak a Siri command to set your Good Morning scene, light up the Christmas tree in the evening, or turn on the fan during a hot day. Eve Motion utilizes a passive infrared sensor, and has a typical reaction time of two seconds, an IPX3-certified water resistance rating, and comes in a sleek white housing that is free of buttons or displays.
Like other Eve accessories, Eve Motion connects directly to iPhone, iPad and Apple TV4 using Bluetooth low energy technology, without the need for a hub, gateway, or bridge.
The first step is to pair your iOS device with Eve Motion in the Eve app, add the accessory to a room, and set a Siri name.
Next, set the Sensitivity, where Low means more movement is required to trigger Eve Motion, and High means less movement is required. You can always adjust this value later in settings.
The next step is to set Duration, which defines how long motion is displayed as Detected after motion has ceased. If need be, you can set rules incorporating this Duration value to deactivate devices that have been activated via motion detection. As with Sensitivity, this Duration value may be altered at any time in settings.
Find a location for Eve Motion
For best results, position Eve motion at a height of 1 to 2 meters (3-6 ft.) above your floor. Thanks to a large 120° field of view and a range of up to nine meters (27 ft.), you can even use it in spacious rooms. Eve Motion has a typical reaction time of two seconds, which you should take into account when setting up scenes.
Scenes and Rules
After completing the initial installation, you can create rules with value triggers to use Eve Motion for control. Here’s an example:
The Breakfast On scene switches on the radio via Eve Energy, and the kitchen light via a Hue light strip. The second scene, Breakfast Off, turns off the devices. Test the scenes manually via the app Eve.
Add a new rule with a value trigger and select Motion in Types. Activate Eve Motion and select Specific > Detected as a trigger value. Then, select the Breakfast On scene to be executed, and name the rule Kitchen On.
In order for the light and radio to turn off automatically, you need to set a second rule. Select a rule with a value trigger, then select Motion in Types, and select Specific > Clear as the trigger value. Assign the scene Breakfast Off and name the rule Kitchen Off, or any other name you prefer.
Using Eve Motion
As soon as a person enters the kitchen, Eve Motion detects movement and triggers the scene, which switches on the light and radio. The status Detected is maintained, depending on the default value of the Duration i.e. 2 minutes in our example above (Tab Bar > Settings > Devices > Eve Motion > Duration). If Eve Motion detects more movement within these two minutes (Duration), the duration of the status, Detected, will reset to 2 minutes and count down accordingly.
If no movement is detected during this time, the status of Eve Motion changes to Clear once the Duration has expired. This change in the value triggers the Breakfast Off scene in which the lamps and radio turn off automatically.
For optimum performance, ascertain a suitable, unique Duration value for each setup involving Eve Motion. This may require some experimentation. You may also want to play around with the Sensitivity setting, as Eve Motion may detect the movement of pets if sensitivity is set to High.
Eve Motion is now available for USD $49,95 at Elgato’s Online Store and on Amazon.com. It will be available in Apple stores worldwide and on Apple.com soon.
